Description

Chokeberry Black (Aronia melanocarpa) is a hardy deciduous shrub prized for its four-season interest and adaptability in the landscape. This vase-shaped shrub reaches a mature height of 7 feet and a width of 5 feet, featuring glossy green foliage, showy clusters of white spring flowers, striking purple-red fall color, and ornamental black berries that persist into winter. Thriving in full sun and moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, Chokeberry – Black performs best in USDA Zones 5 to 7 and makes an excellent addition to borders, naturalized areas, or mass plantings.

In mid-spring, panicles of white flowers with brick-red anthers emerge, creating a beautiful contrast against the foliage. As the seasons change, its dark berries appear in late summer and last through winter, attracting birds and adding visual appeal. Though it has a tendency to sucker, this quality makes it ideal for natural screens or erosion control. Chokeberry Black brings structure, color, and wildlife interest to any garden, making it a standout shrub for year-round beauty.
