Description

Crocus sativus is a unique autumn-blooming crocus that produces delicate lilac-purple flowers with three vivid red stigmas, which are harvested to make saffron. Growing 4 to 6 inches tall, Crocus sativus adds rich fall color to herb gardens, rock gardens, borders, and other sunny spaces. It grows best in full sun to part shade and prefers gritty, well-drained soil with dry summers. Plant the corms about 4 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart in late summer or early fall, with the pointed end facing up. Water lightly during growth and let the foliage die back naturally after flowering. Hardy in zones 6 to 9, this drought-tolerant crocus can return each year when grown in the right conditions.
