Description
Allium nigrum, also known as black garlic or broad-leaved leek, is a striking allium with flat clusters of creamy-white to pale lilac, star-shaped flowers. The blooms feature green centers and rise on sturdy stems that reach 18 to 24 inches tall. Allium nigrum blooms in late spring to early summer and grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and resistant to deer while attracting bees and other pollinators. Its airy flower clusters look beautiful in borders and mixed plantings, especially when paired with peonies and irises. Plant bulbs about 5 inches deep and 6 to 12 inches apart in fall for a beautiful seasonal display.
