Prickly Pear Cactus is a low-growing, heat-tolerant perennial that offers unique texture and bold yellow flowers. In Massachusetts, it brings a Southwestern flair to rocky or alpine gardens with its bright green pads and seasonal blooms. Although mostly spineless, it should still be handled with care due to fine glochids. Prickly Pear Cactus also produces edible red fruit, adding both ornamental and culinary value.

Deer tend to avoid it, and its spreading habit makes it an excellent groundcover for challenging dry spots.
