Description
Field Mint is one of the few native mints found in Massachusetts, known for its white and purple flowers and aromatic foliage. This hardy perennial contains essential oil glands, making the leaves ideal for flavoring sauces, jellies, and beverages. Field Mint's sweet scent intensifies when crushed or walked on—a trait rooted in ancient mythology. According to legend, Pluto’s jealous queen trampled Mintho into the ground, and the gods made her fragrant to soften her fate.
In Massachusetts gardens, Field Mint thrives in moist soil and full to partial sun. The four-lobed, symmetrical flower clusters distinguish it from other mints with more typical spike blooms. Field Mint spreads naturally, making it excellent for wild gardens, borders, or herb beds. With its culinary value and fragrant charm, Field Mint is both useful and uniquely beautiful.
