Description

Winterberry – Winter Red (Botanical Name: Ilex Verticillata Winter Red) is a deciduous shrub cherished for its profusion of vibrant cherry red berries that adorn its branches from mid-fall through late winter. Requiring a male pollinator, for fruit production, this shrub features an oval shape and reaches a mature height and width of 8 feet.

Thriving in Zones 3 to 8, this shrub prefers full sun to part sun exposure and consistently moist, well-draining soil with a highly acidic pH. Its upright growth habit lends itself well to forming colonies through suckering. This makes it ideal for mass planting or creating naturalized areas in the landscape.

While prized primarily for its ornamental berries, Winter Red Winterberry also boasts dark green deciduous foliage. This serves as an attractive backdrop for the vibrant red fruit. Its foliage does not undergo significant fall coloration, maintaining its green hue throughout the autumn season.

Blooming in late spring to early summer, this Winterberry adds visual interest to the garden with its delicate flowers. However, to ensure abundant berry production, it requires a male clone for pollination. This shrub's ability to thrive in moist, acidic soils makes it particularly suitable for problem areas and wetter conditions in the landscape.

Overall, Winterberry – Winter Red is a popular and visually striking addition to any garden, providing vibrant color and interest during the winter months when many other plants are dormant. Its adaptability to various light conditions and soil types, coupled with its attractive foliage and abundant berries, make it a valuable asset in landscapes across a wide range of zones.
